About the PMTA
The Parkland Music Teachers Association (PMTA) members teach music lessons in Stony Plain, Spruce Grove, and Parkland county areas of Alberta. PMTA was founded in the early 1980's by Joanne Johnston, a Spruce Grove, AB piano teacher. During the early years, PMTA members met informally in Joanne's home to share teaching ideas.
Today, members still share teaching ideas. But, they also enjoy social events, host workshops and perform at the February Fantasy concert and other events. In addition, the PMTA plans the annual Gala concert -- which is the highlight of the Parkland Music Festival weekend.
In 1991, the first Parkland Music Festival was held in one venue in Stony Plain, AB. Dr. Lillian Upright, a distinguished Edmonton piano teacher, was the first festival adjudicator. In 2011, the Parkland Music Festival celebrated its 20th year by hosting numerous entrants, music teachers, adjudicators, and volunteers. Parkland Music Teachers Association was incorporated on August 10, 2011 and has officially become a not-for-profit society.
The mission statement of the PMTA is "to cultivate the love and knowledge of music through professional music teaching, educational opportunities, and cultural events to raise the profile of music within our community."
Whether you are a music teacher or an Arts friendly business, you are invited to join the PMTA!
